As we get older, Father's Day starts to feel a little less about finding the perfect present and a lot more about finding time to be together.

It's a chance to celebrate the dads and father figures who have been there through it all — the early-morning sports runs, questionable dad jokes, practical advice, words of encouragement and little acts of support that often mean more than we realise.

Whether you're celebrating Dad, a grandfather, stepdad, uncle, mentor or another important father figure, Glenferrie Road has everything you need to make a day of it.

From breakfast and long lunches to local shopping, vinyl, movies and thoughtful gifts, here are a few ideas for celebrating Dad in the heart of Hawthorn.

Start around the table

Before worrying about presents, start with something you can both enjoy: good food and uninterrupted time together.

For the coffee-loving dad, try something a little different at Four Kilo Fish, or settle in for brunch at Short Straw or Marché Café.

Prefer to let Dad sleep in? Make lunch the main event. Explore Northern Vietnamese flavours at Old Quarter – Pho Ly Quoc Su, or make an occasion of it with Italian and Venetian-inspired dining at Vaporetto Bar & Eatery.

There's also Rococo Hawthorn for Italian favourites, pizza and a glass of wine.

With cuisines from around the world packed into Glenferrie Road, the hardest part might be deciding where Dad wants to eat.

A fresh cut for Father's Day

Sometimes the best present is something Dad probably wouldn't organise for himself.

Treat him to a fresh cut, beard trim or a little old-fashioned barber treatment at one of Glenferrie Road's local barbers.

There's Roy's Barber Shop, The Barber's Son and Urban Man for cuts, fades, beard trims and plenty of grooming options.

Whether Dad is overdue for a tidy-up or deserves the full treatment, it's an easy way to have him looking his best for the rest of the day.

Father's Day starts to feel a little less about finding the perfect present — and a lot more about finding time to be together.

Find something that feels like him

If Dad has been wearing the same favourite shirt for the past decade, Father's Day might be the intervention you've been waiting for.

For classic menswear and personalised service, visit Poloman Specialty Mens Wear, a long-standing part of Glenferrie Road's retail community.

For something more contemporary, 1st PRODUCT in Lido Arcade offers a curated mix of menswear, streetwear, sneakers and accessories.

For the dad who's harder to buy for, browse Homing Instincts for gifts, homewares and cards, or Blackbird & Fox for a thoughtfully curated collection of gifts and lifestyle products.

And for the dad who loves a challenge — or still takes family game night a little too seriously — Mind Games is packed with possibilities, from board games and puzzles to LEGO, role-playing games, trading cards and plenty of classics.

For the foodie Dad

For some dads, the quickest way to their heart really is through their stomach.

Build your own Father's Day hamper with specialty foods and fresh produce from The Leaf Store, or visit Glenferrie Continental Deli for European deli favourites and gourmet treats.

If Dad considers himself king of the barbecue, stop by Glenferrie Gourmet Meats for a great cut of meat, a selection of sauces and condiments worthy of a Father's Day feast.

For something to drink, the team at independent Small Patch can help you choose a bottle to match Dad's tastes, while Red White & Amber Liquor Merchants has a huge selection of wine, craft beer and spirits.

Put it all together and you've got everything you need for a Father's Day spread at home — just make sure Dad isn't the one left doing all the cooking.

For the dad who swears vinyl sounds better

If Dad still insists music sounds better on vinyl, Glenferrie Road has him well covered.

Hidden near Glenferrie Station, Alley Tunes has been part of Hawthorn's music scene since 1994. Dad can happily spend an hour digging through new and second-hand records spanning electronic, jazz, funk, soul, rock, reggae and more — preferably with a coffee in hand.

Then there's Sabi Sounds, bringing together specialty coffee, matcha and Japanese–Korean treats with a curated vinyl library and dedicated hi-fi listening booths.

Book some listening time, choose a record together and settle in, or browse Sabi's collection of vinyl, turntables and other music and lifestyle finds.

For the dad who prefers a great book, Readings Hawthorn is just down the road, with everything from fiction and biographies to history, cooking and current affairs.

Give him an experience instead

Sometimes the best present doesn't need wrapping paper.

Grab tickets to Lido Cinemas, pick a new release and settle in for a couple of hours together. Better yet, turn it into a full Father's Day outing with lunch on Glenferrie Road, a movie at Lido and dinner or a drink afterwards.

Experiences don't need to be extravagant. Sometimes simply organising something Dad enjoys — and making the time to do it with him — is the best gift of all.

Years from now, Dad probably won't remember exactly what was inside the gift bag.

And while you're out, finish the day with something sweet at Joli, known for its Southeast Asian-inspired coconut desserts.

Make a day of it on Glenferrie Road

At its heart, Father's Day isn't really about presents.

It's about recognising the people who have encouraged us, taught us, made us laugh, picked us up when things didn't go to plan and celebrated alongside us when they did.

So this Sunday, 6 September, make some time for Dad.

Grab a coffee. Stay for lunch. Catch a movie. Flip through some records. Wander the shops. Find something special. Or simply sit down together and enjoy having nowhere else you need to be.

Because years from now, Dad probably won't remember exactly what was inside the gift bag.

But he might remember the coffee you had together, the record you discovered, the movie you saw or the ridiculous thing you laughed about over lunch.
